Peace, Security, and Conflict Datasets

This collection features datasets on peace, security, and development, including human rights, internal displacement, terrorism, and conflict events across Africa and globally. Although the list is frequently updated, it is, however, not exhaustive.

• Alliance Treaty Obligations and Provisions Project (ATOP)

  The Alliance Treaty Obligations and Provisions (ATOP) project provides data regarding the content of military alliance agreements signed by all countries of the world between 1815 and 2018.

• Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project

  The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project.

• CIRI Human Rights Data Project

  The CIRI Human Rights Dataset contains standards-based quantitative information on government respect for 15 internationally recognized human rights for 202 countries, annually from 1981-2011.

• Correlates of War

  Quantitative data project for topics in International Relations including militarized disputes, war, and territorial changes.

• GDELT Project

  Today the GDELT Project consists of over a quarter-billion event records in over 300 categories covering the entire world from 1979 to present, along with a massive network diagram connecting every person, organization, location, theme and emotion.

• Global Internal Displacement Database (GIDD)

• Global Peace Index

  The Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP) creates the GPI using data collected by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The index consists of 23 indicators from a variety of respected sources.

• Global Terrorism Database

  Open-source database including information on terrorist events around the world from 1970-present.

• Integrated Network for Societal Conflict Research

  Center for Systemic Peace datasets covering political violence, displaced populations, state failure, terrorist bombings, and more. Copyright applies to data if used, reproduced, or redistributed.

• International Crisis Behavior (ICB) Project

  Covering 1918 to 2017, dataset consists of 487 crises and 1,078 crisis actors.

• Minorities at Risk

  MAR project provides data on politically active communal groups of at least 500,000 people. Monitors status and conflict.

• Nonviolent and Violent Campaigns and Outcomes (NAVCO) Data Project

  Nonviolent and Violent Campaigns and Outcomes (NAVCO) Data Project is a multi-level data collection effort that catalogues major nonviolent and violent resistance campaigns around the globe from 1900-2019

• Peace Accords Matrix (PAM) Dataset

  From the University of Notre Dame, this database compiles all comprehensive peace agreements and their implementations created between 1989 to 2012.

• Political Instability Task Force: Worldwide Atrocities Dataset

  "Global dataset that describes, in quantitative terms, the deliberate killing of non-combatant civilians in the context of a wider political conflict." Coverage 1995-2020.

• Political Terror Scale

  The PTS meas­ures levels of polit­ic­al vi­ol­ence and ter­ror that a coun­try ex­per­i­ences in a par­tic­u­lar year based on a 5-level “ter­ror scale” ori­gin­ally de­veloped by Free­dom House. Coverage: 1976-2019.

• RAND Database of Worldwide Terrorism Incidents

  Over 40,000 events from 1968-2009. Free for research and analysis. If using the data in your research, you must attribute to RAND Database of Worldwide Terrorism Incidents.

• Social Conflict Analysis Database (SCAD)

  The Social Conflict Analysis Database (SCAD) includes protests, riots, strikes, inter-communal conflict, government violence against civilians, and other forms of social conflict not systematically tracked in other conflict datasets. SCAD currently includes information social conflicts from 1990-2017, covering all of Africa and now also Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

• START Data Collections

  The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism maintains 19 data collections covering terrorism, public opinion, predictors of activism and radicalism and other topics.

• Uppsala Conflict Data Program

  The UCDP continually collects data on armed conflict.
